Culinary Scholarship - Finding And Winning Your Dreams

By Howard Cottman

You may think that the hardest part of obtaining a culinary scholarship is actually winning one. However, the truth is finding the scholarship can be harder than winning it. The truth of the matter is, you have likely not heard of many scholarships in the culinary world, even though many do exist. Generally, they are not loudly advertised in such a way as many other scholarship forms. There are many available and that is the good news. The bad, well, you have to look for them and look for them hard.

In order to win a culinary scholarship, you will have to find them. So the best places to start is by creating a list of those you find, the internet and your local telephone book can be of big help to you in this matter. So what are you looking for? Well, some examples of places that may offer scholarships to prospective and current students could include charitable foundations, employers, corporations, businesses, professional culinary organizations, civic groups, community groups, universities, colleges, and schools.

Your list should include the name of the scholarship, the sponsor, name of the contact, their telephone number, how much the scholarship is worth, requirements for the scholarship, and deadline for your application.

Now that you have your list, you have to think about how you are going to win that scholarship. You need to start very early in search of a culinary scholarship, some people suggest you start one to two years before you actually need the scholarship. Local scholarships offer your best chances of winning. There are a few reasons for this. First, at a local level, there are likely to be far fewer students vying for the same scholarship. Even though the local culinary scholarship may have a smaller sum of money attached to it, the larger and more national scholarship opportunities with higher sums will likely have more students all going for the same one.

Another reason you should be starting early, is that the requirements may be something you do not perform particularly well. This gives you the opportunity to perfect the skill so you can give the judges exactly what they are looking for in a culinary scholarship recipient. Judges are looking for the best of the best, therefore, you should get your application in early and make sure it is strong. By ensuring a strong application submitted well ahead of time, you are giving yourself a better chance at being remembered when it comes time to choose a winner.

There are plenty of culinary scholarships to be had within this field, the point is you need to make the judges believe you are worthy of that money. That you will excel in the field and become one of the best students.
